Medical nutrition therapy should be based on presence of co-morbidities, and the assessment of food preferences, cooking facilities, capabilities, dentition and swallowing ability, food availability, cultural appropriateness, finances, personal preferences, and individual wishes and willingness to change as indicated to help achieve treatment goals, avoid hypoglycemia, and to prevent and minimize complicating conditions.
